Position: Senior Reporter, Special Projects, Currents News (New York City)

Overview:

Currents News is looking for an experienced, ambitious, and creative video journalist who specializes in special projects and events. Qualified candidates must be able to cover and dig deep into a wide range of stories that will air on a nightly newscast from the Catholic perspective in the New York market. You will work with a team of multi-media journalists. This person must be expert in developing enterprising stories and turning compelling content in the long-form format. Based on ability and experience, the senior reporter will be considered to fill-in on the anchor desk.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Pitch compelling stories in editorial and planning meetings
  • Research and develop in-depth stories that adhere to journalistic ethics and standards
  • Work closely with the executive producer on scripting and production elements
  • Gather and verify information that adds context and perspective to otherwise standard stories
  • Covers breaking news when necessary
  • Posts video to digital platforms
  • Uses social media to promote and share stories and interacts with viewers
  • Is flexible to travel to story assignments nationally or abroad, with little notice
  • Works on special assignments during coverage of big events

Skills and Requirements:

  • Degree in journalism, broadcast news, or equivalent
  • 5+ years reporting experience on long and short form stories/series in top 50 market
  • Exceptional news judgment and working knowledge of copyright protocols
  • Excellent broadcast writing, communication, and organizational skills
  • Excellent interviewer
  • Solid and proven live skills with ability to ad lib
  • Maintain a professional on-air appearance and presentation
  • Experience working on digital platforms with ability share content on social media
  • Strong and proven ability to multi-task and work under tight deadlines
  • Willing to work late hours and weekends, as needed
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with clean driving record
  • Knowledge of Catholic Church teachings and traditions a plus
