Position: Editor-in-Chief (The Tablet)

Overview:

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn’s award-winning weekly newspaper, The Tablet, is looking for a seasoned journalist and manager to fill the role of editor-in-chief. The Tablet­—in print since 1908—has a circulation of 55,000 and reaches all 50 states. The editor-in-chief reports to the Executive Director of News and Development and is responsible for all of the newspaper’s content, executes the editorial mission of the publication and oversees the administrative responsibilities that come with running a staff of reporters, editors, and a designer. You will work closely with the managing editor of news operations to coordinate coverage and share resources between several subdivisions of the department including the Spanish-language newspaper, Nuestra Voz, as well as the TV and digital news operations. You will also collaborate international and national coverage with our partners, the editors of cruxnow.com, the Rome-based news organization that offers reports and analysis on the Church. The ideal candidate will exhibit creativity, exploring and finding new and innovative ways to report on and distribute the news from the Catholic perspective. The editor-in-chief will also collaborate with the sales director to grow advertising opportunities and to produce special advertising sections. This is a forward-facing position that requires excellent news judgment, impeccable attention to detail, making public appearances (sometimes after hours), speaking on behalf of the newspaper, attending events, and working to promote and preserve the publication’s brand and legacy. The editor-in-chief will have a vast knowledge of the Roman Catholic Church including its teachings, structure, and history.

Responsibilities/Duties (not limited to):

  • Be responsible and manage the day-to-day editorial and operations of the newspaper
  • Help to implement the executive director’s strategy and mission to uphold the highest journalist standards that will add value the brand and grow readership
  • Approve the publication’s layout, design, objectivity, and tone
  • Collaborate with editors and producers from neighboring departments
  • Be active in the local community and attend events
  • Stay up to date on all current events, including secular and religious stories and find the thread that connects them
  • Occasionally report on high-profile stories and issues
  • Step in to edit and give guidance on reporter articles, as needed
  • Coach and develop writers, junior editors and senior editors
  • Work closely with assignment desk to maximize resources
  • Keep track of the budget and approve and submit freelance invoices
  • Approve time off requests for the newspaper staff
  • Organize and coordinate special section and pullouts
  • Recruit for open positions and work with the executive director of news and HR director during the hiring process
  • Communicate and coordinate with columnists
  • Attend editorial and managers’ meetings
  • Identify and submit articles for journalism award submissions

Experience/Skills:

  • 8+ years as a newspaper editor or editor-in-chief
  • Degree in journalism, English, or equivalent
  • Excellent print writing skills and knowledge of the AP style
  • Excellent news judgment
  • In-depth knowledge of the Catholic Church
  • Proven skills in management and leadership
  • Knowledge of libel laws
  • Ability to multitask with precision
  • Thrives in a deadline-driven environment
  • Attention to detail
  • Trained eye for design and layout
  • Adobe InDesign
  • Proficient in WordPress and/or Hubspot for posting articles to website and working knowledge of SEO
  • Knows social media best practices
